Launch of the Press Now – IKV program “Enhancing media freedom and professionalism of the media in Morocco”

Press Now programme coordinator Steven Assies and external consultant Petrus Schothorst will visit the Moroccan city of Rabat in order to launch the Press Now – IKV program “Enhancing media freedom and professionalism of the media in Morocco”.

Overall objective of the program is to support the democratization process in , contributing to the professionalization of the media and media support institutes and furthering the role of the media as a platform for investigation and debate.

The program is the result of a joint identification mission of Press Now and IKV in 2005. The program, which will be carried out in close cooperation with local organizations, is build around a number of activities:

· The Press Now fund to support special journalistic projects will be continued. The fund aims to support projects (investigative reporting or grand reportage) on issues relevant to Moroccan society.

· Press Now will support the Institut Superieur de l’ Information et de la Communication (Higher Institute for Information and Communication, ISIC) to modernize and improve its curriculum and to train the trainers so that it better answers to the demands of the media industry.

· The Federation of Moroccan Newspaper Publishers (FMEJ) will receive assistance aimed at professionalising the association, enhancing its role as an effective lobby and service organization.

· The Centre for Media Freedom – Middle East and North Africa (CMF-MENA) will carry out a research on media coverage of the Islamist question.

· IKV will in close cooperation with local organizations organize a series of debates about the role of Islamists in the Moroccan transition process.

Aim of the working visit, which takes place from the 10th until the 16th of December, is to discuss with the local partners the Institute for Information and Communication (ISIC) and the Morocco Federation of Newspaper Publishers (FMEJ) about implementing the program.

This project is financially supported by the Social Transformation Programme Central and Eastern Europe (Matra) of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
